  • The following franchises are in force in the city:

    Ordinance No. 848, adopted on June 18, 1974, grants a thirty-year electric franchise to Alabama Power Company.

    Ordinance No. 1112, adopted on February 1, 1983, technically does not grant a franchise; rather, it provides procedures to be followed in obtaining a cable television system (CATV) franchise and prescribes regulations for such franchise and franchises. As amended by Ord. No. 1147, adopted on April 3, 1984.

    Ordinance No. 1115, adopted on April 5, 1983, grants a thirty-year water system franchise to The Water Works Board of the City of Auburn.

    Ordinance No. 1148, adopted on April 3, 1984, grants a cable television service franchise to Harold D. Jackson for Lakewood Commons Townhouse Development.

    Ordinance No. 1149, adopted on April 17, 1984, grants a cable television service franchise to Billy J. Kirkley, Wiley Williams, and Wally Nall for Ridgewood Village Mobile Home Park.

    Ordinance No. 1178, adopted on December 20, 1984, grants a franchise to the Governmental Utility Services Corporation.

    Ordinance No. 1185, adopted on February 5, 1985, grants a franchise to Alabama Gas Corporation.

    Ordinance No. 1202, adopted on September 17, 1985, grants a cable television service franchise to Juneman/Eddleman Development Company for Brookes Commons.

    Ordinance No. 1239, adopted on February 3, 1987, grants a franchise for the operation of a water works plant and distribution system to the city water works board. (See also Ordinance No. 1115, adopted April 5, 1983.)

    Ordinance No. 1243, adopted on May 5, 1987, grants a renewal franchise to Telecable of Lee County, Inc., to operate a cable system commencing October 12, 1991 (expiration date of existing franchise), for a period of twenty (20) years. As amended by Ord. No. 1457, adopted December 1, 1992. As amended by Ord. No. 1933, adopted July 18, 2000. As amended by Ord. No. 1842, § 10, adopted July 6, 1999.

    Ordinance No. 1464, adopted March 2, 1993, grants a thirty-year franchise to the water works board to acquire, construct, own, maintain, enlarge, improve and operate a water works plant and distribution system for the purpose of supplying water to the city.

    Ordinance No. 1509, adopted on April 19, 1994, grants a thirty-year franchise to Alabama Power Company.

    Ordinance No. 1619, adopted February 6, 1996, grants a twenty-eight year franchise to Dixie Electric Cooperative.

    Ordinance No. 1620, adopted February 6, 1996, grants a twenty-eight year franchise to Tallapoosa River Electric Cooperative.

    Ordinance No. 2640, adopted November 3, 2009, grants a non-exclusive franchise for a period of ten (10) years to Knology of Alabama, Inc.

    Ordinance No. 2654, adopted April 20, 2010, grants a thirty-year renewal franchise to the water works board to acquire, construct, own, maintain, enlarge, improve and operate a water works plant and distribution system for the purpose of supplying water to the city.

    Ordinance No. 2683, adopted November 2, 2010, extend the expiration of the city's grant of franchise to use the public rights-of-way in the city to Interstate Fibernet, Inc., and to approve the merger of ITC^Deltacom, Inc., parent company of Interstate Fibernet, with Earthlink, Inc.

    Ordinance No. 2692, adopted January 4, 2011, respecting the use of the public rights-of-way in the City of Auburn, Alabama by USCarrier Telecom, LLC and Lightwave Technologies, LLC.

    Ordinance No. 2728, adopted October 18, 2011, grants a non-exclusive franchise to Marcus Cable of Alabama, LLC l/k/a Charter Communications for the purpose of providing cable services to the citizens of Auburn and the businesses operating within the city limits of the City of Auburn.

    Ordinance No. 2765, adopted May 15, 2012, approve the assignment of a non-exclusive franchise agreement from Knology of Alabama, Inc., to WideOpenWest Finance, LLC.

    Ordinance No. 2915, adopted February 3, 2015, granting a franchise to Alabama Gas Corporation, its successors and assigns, in the City of Auburn, Alabama.

    Ordinance No. 3182, adopted October 15, 2019, grants a non-exclusive franchise to Point Broadband of Opelika, LLC to construct, operate, maintain and upgrade a cable system in the City of Auburn, Alabama setting forth conditions accompanying the grant of franchise.

    The City Code does not repeal or affect the validity of any of the aforementioned ordinances.
